STUDY AND SOLUTION RATIONALE
Caffeine is rapidly absorbed in the body, within 45 minutes of oral consumption, and reaches peak level in the blood between 15 minutes to 2 hours after that. (1) The main drawback of caffeine consumption is the “crash” that comes with traditional intake, commonly resulting in headaches, tiredness, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. A sustained-release format could still provide the benefits of caffeine consumption while limiting the undesirable, withdrawal-associated drawbacks.
The objective of this research was to develop a sustained release system using a hydrophobic polymer (ethyl cellulose), which also effectively mitigated API bitterness. The final dosage form was an effervescent tablet, maximizing consumer experience and promoting hydration, which is also essential to overcome caffeine diuretic effects.
